My first social media account was Facebook in middle school. I remember using the platform to interact with friends after school. In high school is when Instagram came out. I think social media has changed in many ways since those early days. I think social media has allowed for people to interact they otherwise would never have met. Social media has the ability to teach people about cultures and lives across the world. I enjoy how much I have learned on social media through sourced facts and articles. Although these are positive attributes, I have seen and been apart of the negative sides of it. I have experienced the anxiety that posts can cause. I have seen people attacked or ridiculed for the things they post. In my current relationship with social media I use it to stay connected and up to date with friends and current events. During the school day, I never go online so it feels purposeful when I scroll after work. However, during breaks from school I find myself mindlessly scrolling. When I find myself doing that for long periods of time I feel empty and bored. My boyfriend is the social media manager for a sports company. Our careers and relationship with social media is very different. After work he wants to disconnect and after work I want to catch up on what I have missed for that day.
Through the experiences and things I have learned in these technology courses I have a newfound respect for using social media in the workplace. I previously did not know about Twitter Chats or Twitter Spaces. Social media has allowed me the time to learn new trends and solutions on my own. I follow accounts and people who inspire me to be the best teacher I can be. I look forward to learning more through this last course.
Brittany,
ReplyDeleteIt sound like we have a very similar relationship with social media: we can see the benefits of it when it is used in a healthy way but have also been caught in the social media trap of scrolling for hours. It is interesting to hear about how your boyfriend's social media usage is so different to yours and how using social media in a work space must change your relationship with it overall too.
Also congratulations with almost being done with your Masters and getting your ESL endorsement--we are on the same path for this as I got my ESL endorsement recently and am finishing up my Masters this term too!
Brittany, what an interesting perspective of dating someone who uses social media as their job as opposed to just socially. I will be interested to hear about your conversations as we progress through this course. I appreciated your honestly in seeing both the positive and negative effects of social media. Being a sixth grade teacher now I am very concerned with how my students' social media use could impact them negatively now and in their futures.
ReplyDeleteHi, Brittany! How interesting to have a different perspective to someone that manages social media for a profession! I'll be curious to see if this changes your view of social media in education at all. Looking forward to learning with you this spring.
